Hispanic Workers Feel Underrepresented in Corporate America

Hispanic Workers Feel Underrepresented in Corporate America

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Job satisfaction among Hispanic workers is suffering in the United States, where 40% of Hispanic corporate professionals feel they need to alter aspects of their personality or behavior to succeed at work, according to a study from think tank Coqual.

Professional Problems

Hispanic workers make up nearly a fifth (19%) of the U.S. population, but less than a tenth (8%) of the professional workforce. Many report racially-motivated treatment, including stereotyping, but also micromanagement from managers and coworkers, per the study.

That is part of the reason Hispanic professionals are 41% more likely to have plans to leave their companies than their White colleagues. More than one-third of respondents to the Coqual survey were actively looking for another job.

Corporate Response

For companies, holding onto talent is key. The pandemic and post-pandemic labor market hammered this lesson home as a historic worker shortage gave workers more negotiating power. The labor market still remains tight, and worker retention is crucial.

Coqual suggests organization focus on instilling culturally inclusive leadership practices, including rewarding diversity of languages and conversations about race and ethnicity. Company policies must also be refined, including better support for foreign and visa-reliant workers, and endorsements of affinity groups.
