Why Office Friendships Are Tricky for Gen Z

Why Office Friendships Are Tricky for Gen Z

Estimated reading time: 0 minutes

Remote work took over during the pandemic. And for younger workers who had their first professional experiences virtually, this trend is changing a key aspect of work: the office friendship.

Work is a key place to make friends for many people. In fact, it’s the second most common place, superseded only by schools, according to data collected by the Wall Street Journal. So what does it mean if workers don’t find this aspect at work.

Making Friends Matters

Having a community of colleagues and peers at work is essential for one’s well-being, to feel supported, and find mentorship. This is especially important as workers move through different stages of life and career, including navigating negotiations, raises, and combining work and family.

But given many Gen Z workers haven’t experienced the traditional office for much or any of their time in the workforce, they don’t tend to think of work as a viable place to create meaningful friendships, which could lead to more loneliness and isolation. For employers, this opens up the opportunity to help their staff connect on more than just meetings and emails to foster a sense of community.
