SoFi FAQ arrow Auto Invest arrow 11What is rebalancing?

Portfolio Rebalancing is the process of adjusting the allocations of the Investment back to the desired target allocations. Over time, the value of different holdings in a portfolio can change due to market fluctuations, resulting in a deviation from the initial allocations defined by the model portfolio.

Rebalancing helps to bring the portfolio back in line with the original investment strategy and risk tolerance. It prevents your portfolio from becoming overly concentrated in a specific asset that might carry higher risk.

If your portfolio deviates from the model portfolio under certain scenarios, Auto Invest will trigger auto-rebalancing to optimize your portfolio.

Example 1: The model portfolio allocates 10% of your invested amount to ETF A. When price moves and differs the actual allocation to absolute 5% above or below the model percentage (e.g. more than 15% or less than 5% in the actual allocation of ETF A), Auto Invest will automatically rebalance for you. If price goes up, Auto Invest will sell part of your ETF A and buy other ETFs in the model portfolio to bring your investment back to the optimal allocation.

Example 2: When you receive dividends from your ETFs or have cash added that causes your total cash balance to go above 1% of your portfolio value plus US$10, Auto Invest will rebalance for you. It will use this excess cash to buy ETFs according to your target portfolio allocation, putting your money to work in the market based on your strategy.

Example 3: If the value of the ETFs in your portfolio increases significantly, it might cause the percentage of cash in your portfolio to drop below 0.25% of the total portfolio value. When your cash level falls below this level, Auto Invest will rebalance for you. Auto Invest will adjust your holdings to bring the cash balance back to an appropriate level needed for the Auto Invest function to operate smoothly.
